Prepare & E-File your Court Forms Online for Los Angeles
This website offers a free, user-friendly way to prepare the correct court forms for a restraining order. You can download your completed forms (PDF) at no cost, or click to e-file them with the appropriate court.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Take Screening
Start with screening to confirm that you're applying for the type of restraining order that fits your situation.
2. Prepare Documents
Instead of looking at the legal forms themselves, you will be guided through a series of detailed questionnaires. These will gather the necessary information topic by topic. The questions are in plain and non-legal language. To make this process as simple as possible, our system will then generate the official court forms with your responses printed on them.
3. Consult Advocate (Optional)
You can consult a victim advocate or pro bono (free) lawyer to get guidance on restraining orders. These resources are paid for typically by government and can help you review your case documents, and talk to you directly to discuss your case and safety planning.
4. File with the Clerk
You can formally begin the case by filing with your local court. You will be informed about the specific court you need to file at as its important to go to one that has jurisdiction over your case. You can file by either printing and visiting the clerk's office at the court or directly from this website as LegalAtoms is an official E-Filing Service Provider.
TYPES OF RESTRAINING ORDERS
Other California restraining order types such as Elder/Disabled Abuse Restraining Order, and Gun Violence Restraining Order are coming soon
Domestic Violence Restraining Order
If you're abused, such as hit, sexually assaulted, threatened, stalked, harassed with calls/texts or online, controlled, isolated or suffered property damage, by a spouse or ex, dating partner, or close family member then this offers no-contact, stay-away distances, move-out, ban firearms, and child custody or visitation. This is enforceable by police, often with same-day or next-business-day temporary protection, and can last up to 5 years. There’s no court filing fee. (Family Code §6200, §6300, §6320)
Civil Harassment Restraining Order
This is for harassment such as stalking, threats, repeated unwanted calls/texts, trespass, vandalism, and other alarming conduct, from someone you never dated or married or closely related to such as a neighbor, coworker, roommate, or distant relative or stranger. It orders no contact, and to stay-away from you. Violations can lead to arrest. There's ~$450 filing fees which is waived for situations involving violence, threats or stalking or if you request due to unaffordability (Civil Code § 527.6, Penal Code § 273.6)
