Hi! My name is Dr. Deirdre Bowen. I am a professor at the Seattle University School of Law. The information that I am about to provide to you should be taken as just that: information and not legal advice.  People who end their relationship, either marriage or domestic partnership, with children, often are curious as to how the custody of their children will be sorted out. Washington state is known as a presumed joint custody state, which means that you and your partner will share residential time meaning how often your children with you vs your spouse,  as well as shared decision making over major decisions like education and health. However, you and your spouse can come up with an agreement which seem reasonable to both of you prior to going to court.

El estado de Washington se conoce como un Estado de Presunción de Custodia Conjunta, lo que significa que idealmente tú y tu pareja compartirán tiempo residencial, que significa qué tanto tiempo tu hijo vivirá contigo a diferencia de tu pareja, además de toma de decisiones compartidas en decisiones importantes como educación y salud. Sin embargo, tú y tu pareja pueden llegar a un acuerdo que sea razonable para ambos antes de ir a la corte.
