Hi! My name is Dr. Deirdre Bowen. I am a professor at the Seattle University School of Law. The information that I am about to provide to you should be taken as just that: information but not legal advice. What happens if the spouse that you were married to lives in a different country, how is jurisdiction i.e. which court will decide your case is determined by where each party lives. It is not impossible to have your divorce decided in Washington state even if your spouse lives in another country. The key determineing facor is where you have residency, where does your spouse have residency and which party filed first for divorce. In addition to that, because the spouse lives in a different country, things like the Hague Convention will come into play to determine whether your state vs the other country has the right to decide the case.
